PICKING CHESTNUTS

The last of the sweetest corn is in.
The tomato patch begins to thin.
The final field of beans comes on.
Leaves careen.

Acorns plop and thud in wind
that cracks the woods near which we live.

Rain moves down the fields in waves.

Because they fall, it's time to pick
the chestnuts where they land.

Like Easter eggs, they hide before our hands.

Their shells reflect and glisten.

We listen.

Before the chest, the hazels drop.
With hammer and a nail the hazel's
chipped apart for its meat that holds
its perfect winter oils;
the beginning of the laying on of fat.

This fundamental commerce
pays one buck a nut
from Mother's grocery money;
makes me again a girl
in my mother's house
where a gentle, persistent order reigns;
the discipline of days in which
one always wakes this day to watering,
and that, to baking;
the daily foraging for food
so fresh and close the roots sing
the names of their leaves
even as they slide down throats
to return again to soil.

We share the joy of
the coming on of chestnuts.

The first day a few,
then in the first cold rain
one hundred.

I prosper.

We hold the gathered nuts in bowls,
where they turn from white to brown in air,
hardening.

You can't take them 'til they're ready.

Hulls with nails are haughty warning.

Chestnuts.

Boiled are best:
hot and rife with wood & smoke
even without coals.

We tangle with the squirrels.

Chestnuts.

Autumn's Easter hunt.

Going Through the Archives

This is old style social media.

The poets Lenny DellaRocca, Jonathan Rose, Bruce Weber & me would get together Sundays for meals and make poetry. Somehow. Anyhow. Bruce and I made a publishing venture of it - 'Do Something! Press'.

This particular poem was from a series of edited 'exquisite corpses' that we made audio poems out of, and a limited edition series of broadsides. I shall have to seek out my copy of it. We created a character - Morris Vieshevsky - to be the ostensible author of the broadside. Fact is, Morris informed and was born of our collective consciousness.

The Rinse Cycle - by Jan Bruce

Most of our weddling coverage was with a Polaroid. We had them duplicated.

Bruce and I made a lot of poetry together as the poetic dyad "Jan Bruce".

"The Rinse Cycle" was recorded in the late 80's at the 233 Lytton Court house.

Had a two-track boom box, a 4-track Tascam machine, and an SM-58 mic.

For me, it was Nancy Drew.

What really caught my kid imagination was the Dick Tracy video / phone / watch - a 2-way wrist radio - that came enclosed in boxes of Trix cereal. Even though the Trix watch was plastic & cardboard, the very idea thrilled me.

Didn't care one way or another about the comic.

Now, I've got one - even though it's a phone.

It still thrills.

That's my ex.

We got awfully silly as poets.

So silly we got drummed out of an experimental poetry workshop @ St. Marks Church. Bernadette Mayer. Yeah.

They just didn't get it.

They missed the point.

Bruce. Me. Elaine Jones and Ed McPhillips.

The four of us did a lot of poetry performance together. Bunches of films (in 16mm), audio tapes, live performance. I'd forgotten how much product we created together as an emsemble. We were prolific.

We even wrote a play together that was produced a couple times by the four of us, and once by Toni Taylor of Pi Dance Theatre.

Transferring old media to new media is simultaneously pain in the ass and amazing journey.

Connecting with old friends temporarily lost to the settlement agreement.

The Boy's First Flight

One side of our house was desert
And the other, the one facing east,
Was Eden itself.
I didn't know this until I bounced on a trampoline
And landed on the garage roof, me the unpaid astronaut,
Age nine, knees scuffed from a rough landing.
I looked about, stunned. A breeze lived
In the sycamore and a single-engine airplane
Hung by a thread of exhaust in the darkening sky.
This was 1961. I asked, "Is this for us?" meaning the bushel of stars,
Pitched and pulsating their icy thorns. The moon was a tiger's tooth,
Hooked in a frightening way. I walked back
And forth on the roof, arms out for balance.
I saw my cat and dog, and they saw me, perhaps in awe,
Because they did lift their eyes to me.

And now it's 1999, the end of the millennium,
And it's certainly the end of my knees,
Those springs long gone. A latch of rust groans in each knee-
How they would love that payload of a taut trampoline.
I see these children, how they jump, fall back, and jump again.
If only I could sit on a roof, in summer,
If only I could watch a Shuttle-what lever does the commander push
To make a smile on his face, her face? I'm in the dark, literally,
Ice cubes rattling in my tea. The crickets sing in the weeds,
And soon the Shuttle, dime-bright, will lift off

Auden’s 100th birthday, and the Poetry Society of America has organized a celebratory reading with Francine Prose, Michael Cunningham and Katha Pollitt, among others. It’s worth remembering that the British-born poet adopted our fair city and even, in his famous experiment in communal living with Carson McCullers, Gypsy Rose Lee, Benjamin Britten, and Jane and Paul Bowles, turned himself into the consummate control-freak New Yorker. “He issued chore lists, meal schedules and budgets, not to mention rules for dinner-table conversation.” Can you imagine the Craigslist haikus that would’ve inspired?

Bill and I worked together years ago. He seemed remarkably human for a still guy, and we got on. When I moved to a loft in Williamsburg I suggested he take some photographs of the place, a spot I knew neared the end of its useful life as both building and working factory.

Was writing a lot back then and shared the words about the factory with him, toward inspiration. After he gave me prints, I re-wrote and ordered the bits together in what I'd wanted to be a handmade, limited edition book. I'd no money to execute the project in the way I'd imagined and its publication foundered, though this one piece found a page in "The World's Longest Open Love Letter".

"Jackie on His Head: For JKO" was one of the poems and short stories that were appropriate to our collective mission of hanging out and documenting the amazing space in which I lived.

Thanks, Dougri, for the links to Crazy Talk animation / TTS program used in the production of this micro-poem. Do you dream about being naked? Fact is, I've never in my life dreamt about swimming naked. Spent most of my childhood in the woods. Buck naked. Climbing trees and splashing about in streams and springs. I looked at one of a series of self-portraits as swimmer today and asked, "WTF?" This poem is the answer.

The Poetry of Death

Philip Clark's grandfather recently passed.

Philly's tributes to that particular process are - as is usual for Mr. Clark - profoundly moving.

In this particular entry, Pirate Pixie left a poem-for-comment I think worthy of note.

It is one of the most perfect examples of what poetry at its best does for us.

12th Annual New Year's Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza

This is something dreamed up with my ex-husband that he continues to produce. Don't much like going out on New Year's Eve, but the day after kinda rocks. Eerily quiet in New York City around noon. A lot of the folks whose hands you see here are long-time poet-friends. Always a good gathering.
